I watch a lot of kid video. Especially this week since I'm watching my two kids as well as my brother-in-law's three kids in what I am convinced is some sort of extreme payback for something shitty I did in a past life.
I don't pay attention to the stuff much unless it's Cars or The Incredibles because they're so well done. Watching Cars today I was struck by how great the opening sequence is. The thing that makes it great is that it's shot like a movie. The camera angles and the way the thing moves are exactly the way it would be done if it was live-action. When you consider that it's animation and so they can do anything they want, it's obvious that they made a conscious choice to make it look, well, real.... in movie terms. The setup is just awesome, the race sounds and Sheryl Crow blasting out and then Bob Costas says. "The Champion, the Runner-Up and the Rookie! Three cars, one Piston Cup! I actually get excited.
That's good movie-making.
